Like Man VS Wild, my six-week trek into the untamed land of Web 2.0 will teach me survival skills to keep me going until I emerge at the pick up site.
Astounding how social media is changing the political landscape right here in River City.
ReplyDeleteThis morning I listened on a radio interview to Don Ivesen, the under 30'ish city councillor explain how the city airport closure debate was won in his Blackberry.
The old school approach led by business folk and politicians who wanted to keep the airport open, used billboards, CHED all-talk radio, and lawn signs that said "My airport is not for sale!"
Well the Schroders and the Males as depicted in the article, turned that slogan into "Not My Airport" and flooded their councillors through Facebook, Twitter and blogs, then Borg-like, connected each to the other and forced the vote.
"Other images and bases of power are beginning to emerge in Alberta enterprise," Babiuk says.
SCHRODER IS QUOTED, "YOU CAN LEVERAGE THE POWER OF A FEW COMMITTED PEOPLE". This is the power of these Web 2.0 tools with which we are flirting.
Wow..it feels rather Luke Skywalker-ish as he is about to find Obi-Wan-Konobi
This has fascinating implications for the way we will teach social studies. I can see how my Social 30's will be hopefully enticed by this example of how one voice can grow to a chorus, by using the tools with which they are already familiar!
Sorry AB ED..your brand new social studies curriculum is already dated...
Mack was either on the local news or in the newspaper about 7 times last week. It is so timely that we are working on this course as this is happening in our political landscape. And I love that everyone is talking about it - everyone from the old media anyway.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to Mack answering some of our questions when we speak with him in August.
